Beetle Prepares for Flight

Special thanks to the Microsoft Corporation for their contribution to our site. The following information came from Microsoft Encarta.

This series of photographs follows a beetle as its prepares for takeoff. First, the beetle warms up its flight muscles by opening and closing its hard wing cases, which are closed in the picture on the left. In the center picture, the beetle begins to fully open its wing cases, revealing the delicate hind wings which will power its flight. These wings automatically unfold as the beetle lifts off in the third picture.
