The Water Snake is a medium sized snake growing to 60-100 cm long. It has a thick grey-brown to dark grey body, with irregular saddle-shaped blotches down it's back that alternate with roundish markings down it's side. These snakes live in and around water, in bays, marshes, rivers and lakes. The Water Snake, like most reptiles loves to bask and they can be found at their warming leisure on rocks, stumps and up in the trees or in amongst shrubs. Their main food sources are tadpoles, fish and frogs. This snake has many sharp teeth in order for it hold on to slippery prey and although it is a timid snake, it will use these these teeth repeatedly if caught and handled and must be given respect. The Water Snake has been confused with the Venomous Water Moccasin, which is not found in Canada.
