The Spotted Salamander usually lives underground near a springtime source of water. Because of this characteristic it is sometimes called the "Mole Salamander". This salamander will tunnel under old rotten logs or stumps, although it prefers to use tunnels already developed by Moles or Voles. The Spotted Salamander is larger than most growing to be 15-18 cm in length and can be recognized by yellow spots arranged over the backside of it's black body. They like to eat snails, insects, tadpoles and worms.
