Trionyx spiniferus

The Spiny Softshell Turtle could probably be our most interesting and uncommon animal in Long Point Country. Different than all other turtles in Ontario, the shell is not hard but leather-like. It is a wary turtle that is very aquatic and spends most of it's life in the water, except when it comes time to lay it's eggs. The Softshell Turtle finds it's food sources in the water, with the ability to assimilate oxygen out of the water the Softshell, with it's camouflaged shell and long neck will bury itself in mud and wait for it's prey to come to it, such as fish, frogs, tadpoles and crayfish. This turtle likes to live in soft bottomed bays and ponds.
