Plethodon cinereus

The Red-Back Salamander is a small lungless salamander which is 5-10 cm long. It lives through colour phases of dark grey and then to a red striped back, that becomes mottled on the sides turning to a light grey on the belly. They, like most salamanders are found under logs, rocks and leaflitter. This is one amphibian that can complete it's life cycle free of standing water. The female usually chooses water soaked rotten wood, (much like a sponge) to lay their eggs. The young are born without gills unlike most other amphibians. As the salamander is cold blooded it does not require much food, only enough to reproduce and it finds it's main food source in the invertibrate world.
