Wood Duck

Aix sponsa

A common duck of open woodland around lakes and streams. The male Wood Duck sports a slicked back crest on a large head with a short neck. They fly rapidly through the trees and feed on plant life from duckweed to acorns. This duck will nest in tree cavities and use nest boxes. The Wood Duck call is a distinctive rising whistle.
