Meleagris gallopavo

Call

An introduction program of the Wild Turkey has proven very successful throughout the Long Point Country. This big bird seems to defy gravity as it soars almost vertical upon take-off. It likes to perch on tree tops and is a very wary bird. The Wild Turkey is said to be one of the most delicious of all the fowl meats.

Originally domesticated by the Aztecs, the common turkey, or the Rio Grande gobbler, ranges from Mexico to the northern forests of North America. Although considered strong fliers, the common turkey can also run at speeds of up to 24 km/h (15 mph). In the wild, the common turkey may enjoy a life span of up to 12 years.
