The common merganser, found across Alaska, Canada, the United States, Asia, Europe, and northern Africa, feeds primarily on the fry and fingerlings of freshwater fish. Nesting takes place in the cavities of trees, where as many as 12 buff-colored eggs are laid.

The Red-necked Merganser is told from the Common Merganser by the the large crest and its red breast.
