Ardea herodias

Call

This the largest of the dark herons that can be found both on the salt and fresh waters. With sharp vision and very quick reflexes the Great Blue Heron can catch itself a frog or a fish in the murkiest of waters. With a wing span of over 70" this tall bird can almost disappear when one looks at it straight on. The Blue Heron is a migratory bird with it's wintering grounds starting just South of the Great Lakes, although one can experience a sighting of the Blue Heron struggling through a Long Point winter.
