Grown in climates from temperate to tropical, peanuts are one of the most important nut crops. Peanut seeds contain
high percentages of oil and protein and are used primarily for food and edible oil. Here, a harvester moves through a
field in Georgia, where peanuts are the primary crop. Georgia’s crops account for half of the peanut crops in the
United States, which contributes one-tenth of the total world peanut production. About half of the peanuts grown in the
U.S. are used to make peanut butter, while one-fourth are sold as roasted peanuts.
