Converting a paperback into a *real* book

Books which are composed of single leaves simply stuck together at the spine, are often referred to as "perfect bound" a.k.a. paperbacks.

This item was a signed and somewhat scarce large paperback which the customer wished to be made into a *real* sewn book, both for structural utility [it would now be able to open flat without pages loosening, etc.] and longevity.

'Perfect bounds' first need to be completely disbound and every leaf cleaned of all residual adhesive.

Leaves are then joined together using a technique called "guarding", and juxtaposed in such a way as to form multi-page folded sections - which can then be sewn together through the folds.

After sewing and backing as a normal book, the customer wished the finished text-block to be bound into a quarter cloth hardcover binding with the original card covers mounted on the inside of the new boards.
