faux spine solution
The challenge was an early 19th Cent. mid-sized folio, still in original 'publishers' binding though the spine was missing and the printed covers were somewhat worn. The text-block itself however was still relatively sound. As this was a very valuable item and an expensive complete restoration would have actually depressed its current market value, a strictly cosmetic solution was required.
A full sized wrapper or sleeve was created in the manner of a raised band leather spine with boards.
When wrapped around the volume, the enclosed book went into a matching custom made slipcase. Now it displays handsomely on the shelf, yet retains all of its original binding qualities.
