A complete restoration in detail (Part Two)

Sewing; Backing; Split Boards; Leather Preparation, etc.

The hand-sewing in this case is over cloth tapes using a typical inter-looped stitch which gives increased insurance against future thread failure.

The sewn text-block is then rounded at the spine, backed with cloth and paper, and is now ready for the new boards to be attached.

Note: the use of four boards per volume. The bulk of these text-blocks require thicker boards, so the cloth tapes and backing cloth flaps are sandwiched between two relatively thin boards.
This method of construction is called 'split boards'.

It affords a more secure attachment, and an overall neatness not possible with other constructions.

As the client requested 'half leather' [spine and corners] bindings with false raised bands, the next step is to prepare the leather pieces by paring a bevel on all of their edges.

In addition, a piece of card (spine liner) is fitted with lengths of cord to simulate the effect of raised cord sewing on a book spine.

Carefully measured and cut decorative papers are also prepared.

The leather spine and corners are attached to the boards...

...and finally the decorative papers.

The interior is finished by pasting the endpapers in.

This set of volumes was completed with hand set, gold-stamped, cloth spine labels.
