To maintain the biodiversity of the Long Point sand spit it is necessary to prevent erosion. A footprint from man can kill a grass root to which wind and water can than remove the unlocked soil and be gone for ever.

Along with the grasses the first natural line of defense against erosion is the fast growing Poplar tree which seem to take to the barren sands of Long Point.

Eventually over the years the dunes and grasses of Long Point will provide the protection needed to create the magnificent ridges covered with carolinian forest seen here.
