It is hard to appreciate the beauty of Long Point when, at any given time and place all one has to do is look and they will find signs of human interference and pollution. Seen below is what three children can find in any given mile of any day on the southern shores of Long Point. Fishing line, lures and lead weights from both the commercial and sport fishermen, plastics of all sorts, old tires and most dangerous of all to wildlife are the thousands of balloons and the tangling ribbons attached to them. Fish, turtles and water birds of all kinds will eat balloons and lead weights, all of which can cause a slow painful death.

A proposal to the communities of Long Point;

"Allow supervised children in groups of three or more per mile to comb and collect the trash in piles along this 17 mile sand spit filter. Follow-up with boats to remove the piles of trash." This should be done annually. Long Point and all of its inhabitants deserve it.

There are almost 100 balloons in this photo, found on one mile of Long Point Beach.
