Maidenhair fern is not easily grown by the average indoor gardener. The plant grows best in diffused, bright light but not strong sunlight or dense shading. Strong light scorches the foliage and dim light causes weak growth. Maidenhair fern needs an evenly moist soil the year round. Best growth occurs in winter when temperatures are cool. Ideal temperatures are 50 degrees at night and 65 to 70 degrees during the day. The plant likes higher humidity but should not be misted. Repotting may be done in March or April if needed. Large plants may have the top layer of soil replaced with fresh soil.
Propagation is by division. First remove the fronds then allow the soil to dry slightly. Remove the plant from the pot and cut it into sections. Repot the sections in 3 to 4 inch pots and start them growing again. Maidenhair fern does not adapt to home environments and will probably decline quickly.
