Brown Rat

Rattus norvegicus

The brown rat belongs to the family Muridae, along with the common vole, Arctic lemming, and golden hamster. The brown rat, also called the common and Norway rat, readily adapts to new surroundings. Brown rats are extremely prolific. Rats transmit a variety of diseases, among them Pasteurella pestis, which was responsible for the Great Plague in London (1664-5).
