Common Mole

Scalopus aquaticus

Moles are small mammals largely subterranean in their habits. They have elongated cylindrical bodies, long narrow snouts that extend beyond the lower jaw, very small eyes, and no external ears, except in the Asiatic shrew moles. Moles rely heavily on their sense of touch and possess small projections covering the snout called Eimer’s organs, which apparently enhance this sense. They feed on a variety of soil organisms such as earthworms and insect larvae encountered while digging their tunnels.
