Jackrabbit & Cottontail

Lepus townsenii (Jack)

Sylvilagus floridanus

The jackrabbit, left, is most easily distinguished from the cottontail, right, by its greatly enlarged ears. In addition, the jackrabbit is actually a hare, while the cottontail is a type of rabbit. Hares are characteristically larger than rabbits, have longer ears, and rarely live socially like the gregarious rabbits.
