The Great Lakes sturgeon, largest of the North American sturgeons, once grew to an adult size of nearly 180 kg
(nearly 400 lb), before the decimation of its stocks due to intentional destruction and excessive commercial fishing
during the early 1900s. Exhibiting very slow growth, this sturgeon does not attain sexual maturity for nearly 20 years.
The Great Lakes sturgeon primarily eats small fish and bottom-dwelling invertebrates.
