Longnose Gar

Lepisosteus osseus

This freshwater fish of North America is an agile hunter. It darts quickly at prey from a hiding spot in the weeds and reeds, where its mottled coloration helps to camouflage it. The gar’s long, narrow body is covered in interlocking diamond-shaped (“ganoid”) scales connected by fibers. This armor helps to further streamline the gar’s body for quick movement through the water.
