The name has many spelling variations including GULLADE (Spanish). As to its arrival in Shetland, the evidence suggests that, "Some early sixteenth century "ferrylouper" (the name given a Scottish settler in Orkney and Shetland) from Fife, carried the name to the Shetland Islands". Earliest record of the name in Shetland is 1577 when Johne GOODLAT, Nichole GOODLAIT, and Thomas GOODLAIT were noted as being tenants in Tingwall. A tradition recalled in this line is that the name was originally Gullet, and that the paternal ancestor came from Germany or perhaps Friesland/Holland. One version has two brothers shipwrecked in Shetland; John GOODLAD, born before 1695, Burland, Trondra. Stodart (II, p. 385) says Henry Guldlat of Abbotishauch appears in 1043 (Inpuis., 2832), Goodlet, old Gudlade, is an old surname and occurs in the neighborhood of Stirling in the fourteenth century. It is also an old surname in Fife, James Gudlad, king's sheriff, appears there in 1491 (Dundas of Dundas, p. lxvii). The name occurs in Perth in 1543 as Gudlat. Robert Guldlett, maryner in Kinghorn, was slain in 1574 when engaged at the fishing on the west coast of Ross-shire (Coll., p. 100—101), and David Guldlaid, who appears as a scribe in St. Andrews, 1585 (St. Andrews, p. 550), may be David Gvdlad (1594) whose tombstone appears in St. Andrews churchyard (PSAS., XLV, p. 536, ill.). Richard Goodlet, born 1948 in Canada feels that this may make him an 8th generation decendant from a Great Grandfather (John GULDLET or GULDLETT) from Abbotshall, Fife, Scotland, who, in 1671 had a criminal charge laid against him. Perhaps it is this same (John GULDLET or GULDLETT) who was also classified as being an early sixteenth century 'ferrylouper' (a name given a Scottish settler in Orkney or Shetland), that may have carried his name to the Shetland Islands from Fife. Where he perhaps then had a son now listed as John GOODLAD born before 1695.
